How the dates work

NOAA publishes frost statistics for thousands of weather stations, averaged over 1991 to 2020. For each city we use the nearest station with records, 1,231 in all, and show the date with a 50% chance of a later frost, plus the safer 10% date.

Planting windows then count from those dates. Tomatoes go out one to three weeks after the last frost, peas go in four to six weeks before it, garlic waits for fall. More on the method.
